Canada’s first celebrity conservationist, Grey Owl was a man of many faults — yet his legacy lives on today. And during a visit to his cabin in central Saskatchewan, even more about this enigma is revealed.
Grey Owl — also known as Archie Belaney — commenced his presentation to a rapt audience yearning to hear more of his existence in the secluded wilderness of northern Saskatchewan. Canada’s first celebrity conservationist was an utter master of oratory, competent at marketing himself to achieve his ends, skilled in exploitation, and successful at perpetuating a fraud — as he was in fact an Englishman representing himself as North American First Nations for much of his life. Despite his controversies, Grey Owl’s 1930s-era home is now a heritage site operated by Parks Canada in Central Saskatchewan’s Prince Albert National Park. In an effort to better understand the man and his legacy, my wife, Marilyn, and I set off to find Grey Owl’s Cabin.
