When Mary Reher and Andy Nowak decided to build a straw bale home on their four North Pender Island hectares, no one was surprised. Nowak was one of the original forces behind the recycling depot on North Pender - where he still works as a manager - and Reher, a music therapist, has always believed in a sustainable lifestyle.
