Roughing it in Modern TimesIn an ever-changing landscape of clear water and rolling hills, a beach on Okanagan Lake meanders along 2,100 feet [640 metres] of shoreline. It’s a private beach, at least in the sense that it’s reserved exclusively for the community of 400 cottages at La Casa Lakeside Cottage Resort. There are several private, small pockets of beach where a family could easily have a small gathering for a picnic if desired. That’s what Diane Wells loves about the resort: having access to both privacy and community.

The 50-something grandmother, who lived in a rustic cabin in interior Alaska for six years in her 20s, bought a La Casa cottage last summer. Wells has long since lost her taste for “roughing it” at the cottage. Her cottage at La Casa meets her criteria and features a gas fireplace, granite countertops, tiled bathrooms, plush beds and quick access to a maid. “Too rustic is when you feel like you’re camping,” she says. “Too modern is when you have to fret over the kids wrecking something.”

“I know a lot of people who have outgrown the rustic experience,” says Wells. “I’m going to the cottage in the woods to disconnect in this community kind of environment, but I’m doing it with luxury. I think when you’re younger, you aspire to get back to nature and drop off the grid. But I have this friend…”
