Constructing your little away-from-it-all cottage can bring big problems right to your doorstep.

In his 17 years of aviation experience, Mark Bressan has only been contracted by a cottage owner once. “It was a job moving supplies to an island cottage in Ontario,” said Bressan of Canadian Helicopters, Canada’s largest helicopter transportation service. “We really don’t do a lot of jobs like that.” Of course, Bressan is speaking of transporting building materials to a remote cottage via chopper.

“People tend to balk at the price. Some inquire, then I tell them how much it is and they come up with a new option,” Bressan laughs, referring to the fact that his company’s helicopters bill out between $1,000 and $3,000 per hour. It’s no wonder most of his business comes from the oil and gas industry rather than the
recreation-loving cottager.

“If you can get there by road, do it that way,” he concludes, adding, “not that I don’t want the business.”
