We received this letter to the editor from reader Clare Brooks Higgins in January 2011:

"I am very excited to see that the website will include "Vintage Cottage" articles - please add to it frequently!! I have been clinging to my back issues since I started subscribing years ago, but am running out of space, plus finding it tedious to locate the articles I remember so clearly. Suggestion: I'd bet people are most interested in "How To" articles (eg: where is that one about building an inexpensive firewood storage shelter?'

We've found it! (After a great deal of digging.)

Here, as originally published in the September/October 2004 issue of Cottage is "From Roof to Woodshed."

The Intrigue of Horne Lakehornelakethumb

In March of 2010, Murray Hamilton, the Strata property manager at Horne Lake, contacted Cottage with the idea to do a follow-up article to that published in 1995. The cottagers around the lake had gone through some major changes and an update was due. You can find the follow-up in the January/February 2011 issue of Cottage, which details how these intrepid cabin owners secured their properties around this gorgeous Vancouver Island lake, but here is the original story of Horne Lake, written by then-editor of Cottage, Peter Chettleburgh. Learn more about the lake here.

Pickle Ridge Rustic Furniture

Furniture Made for the CottageTrellisThumb

John Lore of Pickle Ridge Rustic Carpentry has been building rustic furniture since 1992, and Cottage ran an article on Lore and his handcrafted work in 1997. However, since these classic, affordable pieces always fit in at the cabin, we thought it was a good addition to our Vintage Cottage archives - especially for the holiday season. Like what you see? Visit the Pickle Ridge website here.

Here, as originally published in the July/August 1997 issue of Cottage is "Building on the Rustic Tradition."

Odourless Outhouse

The Search for the Odourless Outhouse

Remember the “odourless outhouse”? This gem had us and some of our especially dedicated readers searching for its original publication date after a letter to the editor requesting it arrived in late 2008. We received multiple responses from long-time subscribers willing to help, including one who actually hunted down the reader who requested it to offer a photocopy of the article.

Here, as originally published in the May/June 2000 issue of Cottage is “Building an Odourless Outhouse.”
